Global Issues Colloquium Extra Credit

I attended the global Issues colloquium presented by professor Cecilia Rizcallah, in which she talks about the fundamental problems occurring within the EU and the impact it has surrounding other countries who are affiliated with the European Union. In terms of foreign policy and looking at things from a global perspective I gained insight on the principles of how to face a crisis in the European Union. Rizcallah pointed out in her presentation that the EU has been hindering children's access to content (social media I presume), that promotes anything related to sexuality and the identification of one's gender completely opposite of the one assigned at birth. She further talks about the role that the union has, and elaborates that the EU is more of an international value-based union, that in her own words "respects the peace and human law".

Rizcallah points out that the organization is separate from any type of military engagement and wants to find ways to provide people to the nations that are in association. Despite the EU's regulation of media and prevention interference from other states, the organization is expanding through the addition of other allied states. As I learned more about EU position in all of Europe, I  wondered if there were other neighboring countries/states that were trying to disassociate themselves from union and if so what are the reasons for withdraw and does it affect the union as whole? (I am not sure if that question was already stated or not).

During the presentation and discussions, I learned that the EU is informant of democratic ideas and the leverage over Hungary, the use of VETO and how both small and large countries cannot impose on each other. There may be certain internal and external challenges that pose a threat to the EU. What I found quite knowledgeable was the removal of parties within the EU and how it's not as simple as telling them to leave, there is a process called unanimity which occurs when treaties are obtained, then there is a leading consensus to expel and sanction members applicable by law. Though national security, global political issues, and foreign policy are subjects that are new to me it's very valuable to be aware of the problems happening in other countries.
