  Research in Education Margins (Above):

    Perceptions of ASL Interpretation Service Offerings at a Secondary Institution, which was presented by Marley (B.A in ASL '25) and Professor Champoux-Crowley (English Department). The research over all was based on the level of learning in D/deaf students and their engagement with interpreters and the factors that lead interpretation services to not producing proper understanding of sign language. I learned about interpreters who are forced to more than their job description how it affects their ability to do their job because they are overloaded with extra menial tasks. The study provides evidence that interpreters who don't have the proper license and certifications can affect learning in deaf children, an example would be obtaining ITP (Interpreter Training Program) certification even though their EIPA (Education Interpreter Performance Assessment) score was low in terms of passing the assessment. A pilot study was conducted by Marley to determine a connection between weak interpreter/teacher dynamics and involvement in deaf community and their comfort level in the classroom. Her summer research study proves that some interpreters were not certified but still taught in classroom, had their jobs roles switched out, and were unable to connect with the D/deaf students. 

    Senior Research and Advanced Translation in French/Spanish (#2 & #3):

        The Day I Will Never Forget ----> "Ce jour que n'oublierai jamais"  in French is a transliterated presentation about the author Franck Foute's experience when he was involved in a train accident. The cause of the accident was because of the derailment of an extra car train that was unable to sustain the capacity of persons on board. The presenter Yaye provided details about the characters and the reason why Train 152 got derailed in Eséka after leaving Yaoundé for Douala. Discussed the measures and limitations in her French translations as well as government action of Cameroon during the days after the accident. She also was able to connect with the author of the book and with a French professor to improve on understanding proverbs/expressions, grammar, and tenses in her translation of the book.

    The Three Stones: Female Resistance in a Film by Tatiana Huezo (Below):

     The presentation is analysis on a movie called Noche de Fuego ----> Prayers of the Stolen (Netflix 2021) when translated from Spanish to English. Nakayla deconstructed the themes of the movie which were identity, dehumanization of women, femininity, motherhood, childhood friendships. I learned about the social differences of women who living in the "Narc world" or an reason surrounded by cartels and crimes. The women in the movie essentially had to put on these masks and take on almost the role of men, since their husbands left to seek better opportunities in America leaving their wives and children exposed to an danger. Death was a theme that was discussed in the beginning of her presentation when she talked about Ana digging in the ground not for fun but to make a human sized coffin to protect herself when the cartel come to her house. Symbolism of the body and how the character Ana uses symbolic items that represent her  on a personal and cultural level to construct what she feels a body is to her. Nakayla was able to encapsulate the harsh reality of femicide and the struggles of women in Mexico who are surrounded by unrelenting violence.
